The name Parbold comes from Old English and means ‘Pear Orchard’. Parbold is in the valley of the River Douglas, from where Douglas Chapel gets its name, and the Leeds Liverpool canal passes close to the town centre.

Dominating the area is Parbold Hill. On a clear day it is possible to see as far as the Isle of Man and the mountains of Wales and the Lake District.

Just below the summit of Parbold Hill is a monument called the Parbold Bottle that was originally erected to commemorate the Great Reform Act of 1832, which extended the right to vote. Originally the monument was on top of a larger building, but when it fell into ruins, only the bottle was repaired, in the 1950s.
