Withington is historically one of the townships of the parish of Manchester in the Salford Hundred of Lancashire. It lies 4 miles south of Manchester City centre and through the ages has been documented as Wythinton, Wythington and Whytinton. It remained largely rural until the Industrial Revolution in the mid 19th century.
