The first Roman Catholic Church of St Alphonsus was a Masonic hall, This stood on Kirkdale Road at the bottom of Everton Valley. It was taken over as a temporary church in 1878; at about the same time that schools were opened on Great Mersey Street.

(The premises on Kirkdale Road was still a church in 1908, but no traces of the buildings on this side of Kirkdale Road remain) In December 1911 the present church was opened next to the schools on Great Mersey Street. It is a large and somewhat raw Classical building of brick, with concrete dressings which resemble limestone. Parish closed in 2001.

Baptism Registers started in 1878 Marriage Register started in 1879.

Early registers have been deposited at the Liverpool Record Office.
