St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, St. James Street
The foundation stone of the church was laid on 6 April 1856 by Bishop Goss. The building which was designed by E. Welby Pugin, was opened on 26 August 1857. It replaced a wooden shed in Norfolk Street and the entire cost of it was paid off that year. The schools were opened on 4 Jan 1859 and were paid for by Mr. Edward Chaloner, who purchased a disused Methodist Church in Jordan Street and handed it over to the parish ready-furnished as a school. This was later demolished and new schools were built in Norfolk Street, called the Chaloner Schools. They were enlarged in 1893 and were, in turn, superceded by the present primary school in Pitt Street which was opened in Sep 1955.
