In order to serve the Catholic population of the rapidly expanding Edge Hill area St. Anne's mission was begun in Sep 1843. It was an off shoot of St. Peter, Seel Street, one of the two with St. Mary, Highfield Street) Benedictine missions in Liverpool. The priest's house was begun in 1841 and from Sep 1843 the first incumbent, Father Maurus Magison, moved in, saying Mass in the house until such time as the church proper should be built. The Church of St. Anne, designed by the architect Charles Hansom, was opened on 4 August 1846.
