The original Chapel of St Leonard was founded in 1557 as a chapelry St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn and restored in 1879. Local tradition states that it was built from stones removed from the dismantled Whalley Abbey and there is evidence of many early carved stones in the building. When the pews were removed during the restoration, some were inscribed with the initials of the former owners and retained. Some of these are dated between 1688 and 1692.
There is a bell in the turret inscribed "T.Elleray, curate 1756".
The church was superseded by the new church of St Leonard. While the Church is now closed for regular worship, it is preserved as an ancient building.
