Preaching is said to have taken place on this site around 1815, the church was founded in 1819 and was completed in 1826. Originally it was known as Silk Mill Lane Independent Church, these were churches in which each congregation was autonomous, upholding the principles of independence. In the 19th century they became known as Congregational.

The church has a graveyard.
