On August 18th, 1824, the death of the minister, Thomas Harbottle was recorded, with the following note added:

It is rather remarkable Mrs Hannah Hartley the mother and Mrs Mary Hartley the daughter were the first and the last interred by Thomas Harbottle. This day Aug 18th 1824 that venerable minister of the gospel Thomas Harbottle "gave up the ghost and was gathered to his people". He was born Sepr. 29th 1749 – baptised by Charles Whitfield of Hamsterley Dec 1st 1791 – soon afterwards called to the ministry. He was ordained at Hawkshead Hill June 11th 1778 - removed to Tottlebank Sepr. 27th 1780. Illness and infirmities of age put an end to his ministerial labours in May 1824 having preached his last sermon (at Oxenpark in the house of his son) from Hebrew 7: 24,25. Having had a lingering and weighty complaint for several weeks he expressed his full resignation to the divine will and satisfaction that his soul was secure on the foundation laid by everlasting love. And this morning about half past nine he gently fell asleep in Jesus not to awake till these Heavens be no more.

Thus rest the Saints and cease to groan
When death & hell have done their worst
Christ has a glory like his own
That waits to clothe their waking dust.

Augt. 21 The remains of Thos. Harbottle nearly 44 years Pastor of this Church were committed to the grave. Brother R. S. Frearson preached from John 11:11  Mr Jo. Davies Indept. Minr. at Ulverston addressed the assembly at the grave.
