The Original Baptist Church on Blackburn Rd
The Original Baptist Church on Blackburn Rd

The Baptist Church in the Accrington area began in 1735 by meeting in a house in Oakenshaw area of Clayton le Moors, where a John Ellison lived. It was supplied with preachers from the Baptist Church in Bacup. The meeting moved to Accrington in about 1765.

A first chapel in Clayton le Moors was built around 1765 at the bottom of Barnes Street by the Forts Arms public house in Chapel Street, demolished in 1905. A larger chapel on the corner of Blackburn Road and Atlas Street was opened in 1888 as a replacement for the first chapel but demolished in 1970 during building of M65 motorway.

The latest Baptist Church on Sparth Road was built in the 1970's following demolition of the above chapel.
