Church had few non-conformist chapels compared to Oswaldtwistle. The Baptists were the main nonconformist movement in the settlement, first opening a school in 1843. Early meetings were in hired rooms, including over Whittaker’s smithy in Wood Street, but in 1845 a new, but small, school and chapel were built near ‘Robert Wade’s timber yard’. In 1868-9 the current chapel was built on Ernest Street, and a new school was added in 1871.The school is now demolished.
