St John the Evangelist was founded in1847. It was officially consecrated in 1849 and the building was enlarged in 1868. It is a thriving Church to the present day.

The generosity of Oldham Whittaker, a local industrialist, enabled the building and furnishing of this Church. He also laid the foundation stone of the nearby Hurst Cross in 1868.
