In 1861 Rev M Moriarty started a mission in Rochdale, in an Assembly Room in Yorkshire Street opposite St James Church. Gradually his congregation increased so the same year a building was erected in Watt’s Street for the purpose of a chapel as well as schools. In 1867 a chapel was erected in close proximity to the schools and consecrated 6 Oct 1867.
