St. Philemon's Church, later St. Philemon-with-St. Silas, Windsor Street
St. Philemon's Church, later St. Philemon-with-St. Silas, Windsor Street

St Philemons Church of England, occupied the block between Windor Street and its junction with Northumberland Street and Dorritt Street.

According to the 'Liverpool Daily Post', 14th July 1874, St. Philemon's Church was consecrated on 13th July 1874 by the Bishop of Chester, the Right Rev. William Jacobson. A note in the baptismal register, 1873 - 1886, (283 PHI 2/1) states that 'the new church of St. Philmon's, Toxteth P., was opened June 7th '74', but the first entry in the same register is dated 10th December 1873. In 1958 the parishes of St. Philemon and St. Silas were amalgamated to form the new parish of St. Philemon-with-St. Silas. A note in the Marriage register of St. John the Baptist with St. Thomas, 1954 - 1966 (283 BAP 3/17) states that 'the benefices and Parishes of St. Philemon with St. Silas, Toxteth Park and St. John the Baptist with St. Thomas Toxteth Park' have become united and the Parish Church of St. Philemon, Toxteth Park has become the Parish Church of the United Parish. The original building in the picture is now demolished and modern housing occupies the site. A new church stands between Admiral Street and High Park Street.
